The Unnamed Prophet, the Donkey and The Lion

There is a story of an unnamed prophet in I Kings, Chapter 13.  I often puzzle over this story; curious to understand what it is teaching.  I am a really dense person and it takes me some time to understand a thing.  I am no theologian and I hope that you will conduct your own studies and not take my word because this is actually the teaching of the story.

Here is the story in a nutshell.  God sent the unnamed prophet to King Jeroboam to prophesy that a king named Josiah would be born to the House of David and that this king, Josiah, would burn the bones of the priest who sacrificed at the heathen altar that Jeroboam had built in Bethel.  Jeroboam became angry and reached out his hand to command the unnamed prophet be taken, but Jeroboam's hand was dried up.  He asked the prophet to ask God to heal his dried up hand and God did.

The prophet had been instructed not to stay in that place, not to eat, drink nor come back the same way by which he had arrived.  So, he followed the orders of the Lord and left by a different route.  Unfortunately, there was an old prophet who heard what had happened.  The old prophet tracked down the young prophet and lied to him.  He instructed the young prophet that by the word of an angel he had been told to bring the young prophet into his home and feed him and give him something to drink.  While the young prophet was enjoying the hospitality of the old prophet the word of the Lord did come through the old prophet.  And this is what he said

I Kings 13:21-22 And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and hast not kept the commandment which the Lord thy God commanded thee, 22 But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the Lord did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.
The old prophet saddled the ass for the young prophet and the young prophet left.  A lion met the young prophet on his way out of town and slew  him.  And the ass and the lion both stood by the carcase.  The old prophet heard about it and went and laid the body of the young prophet on the ass standing by his carcase.  The old prophet not only mourned and buried the young prophet in his own tomb, but instructed his sons to bury him there with the young prophet.

The moral of this story is don't deviate from the Word of the Lord.  We are living in a day of lying prophets.  They are literally everywhere in christendom.  Slews and slews of Christians either think themselves a prophet or deisre to become a prophet.  When I ran with wolves I too desired to be a prophet.  Since, my eyes were opened and I repented of my grievious sins, I just try to stick to the Word of God.  I have no desire to be known among the brethren other than that of a wolf tracker.  Exposing the unfruitful works of darkness.

Reviewing this story, it is ironic that the lying prophet got to live, his donkey didn't get eaten by the lion and he got to be buried with the righteous prophet at the end of his life.

It is horribly sad that the unnamed prophet not only
  • heard the Word of the Lord
  • faithfully delivered it to Jeroboam
  • saw the power of God break the altar
  • wither and restore Jeroboam's hand
  • and resist Jeroboam's offer of hospitality
and then be decieved by the lying prophet.  It is interesting to note that the lying prophet used an angel to decieve the unnamed prophet.  Since when does an angel trump the Word of God?  According to today's lying prophets -- all the time.

We are warned

Galatians 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
Are you part of the many groups following another gospel taught by angels, men, and women.  Joseph Smith is a great example receiving his information from an angel called Moroni.  You have to wonder if there really was an angel that spoke to Joseph Smith, then the angel was playing a joke.  Or perhaps it was Joseph Smith playing the joke on anyone who believed him.  When you drop the "i" from Moroni you are left with "moron."  Remember Satan's angels of "light" and their agents (i.e. Joseph Smith) are horribly cruel.  They love to mock mankind made in the image of God.

The unnamed prophet had clear instructions from God and yet he fell prey to the lion by following alternate instructions.  We have the written Word of God.  Jesus is the Word of God, let us not forget our instructions
Ephesians 5:6-11 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them. 8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

Remember stick to the Word of God lest your head wind up on the wall of some predator.
